A suspected rapist has allegedly been flogged to death by aggrieved residents of Ekowe, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

According to a statement posted on X by one SizZle, the rapist was apprehended as he sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl in the early hours of Thursday.

SizZle alleged that the community caught up with the suspect and flogged him to death.

He wrote, “Early this morning, a man sadly raped a 10-year-old girl in Bayelsa state. The community caught him, tied him up, and flogged him to death quietly.”

According to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, several residents have been arrested by the police in connection to the killing of the suspect.

The source said, “It happened in Ekowe, and the chief and others have been arrested. Such things can not be done quietly. It has turned out to be a murder case, and people are paying dearly for it.

At the time of filing this report, the Bayelsa State Police Command had yet to confirm the occurrence of the incident, which has generated mixed reactions on social media.

Reacting to the news, a social media user, Chijoke Emmanuel Onyekwe, mentioned that jungle justice is the proper way to deal with such criminals.

“Personally, it is a proper way to deal with people like this,” he said.

“The problem is when it concerns some other persons or personalities, we start making excuses for them for the same offense,” he added.

Sharing a similar sentiment, Abiodun David Apata, in his reaction, said, “Well deserved if he truly did it.”

Arguing that the community did a great job, Nicholas Uchechi noted, “Nice one. Highly commendable. The community did a great job there.”

For Martins Chukwuemeka, he urged the residents of the community to take the rape victim for proper medical evaluation.
