President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector General of police (IGP).

In a statement on Tuesday, Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy, said Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the IGP.

Onanuga said Egbetokun cited “pressing family considerations” for his resignation.

The president is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider the appointment of Disu, after which his name will be sent to senate for confirmation.

“The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the statement reads.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

    • How Tunji Disu became IGP

“The President reiterates his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.”

On June 19, 2023, Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as IGP to replace Usman Baba. Egbetokun was then confirmed by the police council in October 2023.

Based on the provisions of the amended police act, Egbetokun would have completed his four-year tenure in June 2027.

    Disu’s Track Record

A career officer who joined the force in 1992, Disu has held strategic positions across the country. He recently took charge of the FCID Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, as assistant inspector-general.

An alumnus of Lagos State University, Disu holds advanced degrees in public administration, criminology, and security psychology. He previously led the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, served as commissioner of police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, and headed the Intelligence Response Team.
