Six people were injured and 14 others briefly trapped after a fire broke out at Terminal One of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

In an update on Monday, FAAN confirmed that the airport’s airspace remains temporarily closed in line with established safety protocols as emergency operations continue.

The agency said the six casualties — three men and three women — are in stable condition. One of the affected persons has been transferred to the FAAN headquarters hospital for further medical evaluation and is also stable.

Emergency response teams comprising firefighting, rescue and safety personnel were immediately deployed to the scene. FAAN disclosed that a crane was mobilised to support rescue efforts at the Control Tower, where 14 individuals were initially trapped. All have since been safely rescued and evacuated.

As an added precaution, the sixth floor of the affected facility has been fully evacuated to aid containment efforts and reduce risk.

Preliminary findings by the fire service indicate that the blaze originated from the server room on the first floor of Terminal One. While the fire in the departure hall is largely under control, responders remain on high alert to prevent it from spreading to adjoining sections.

FAAN said it has activated all emergency procedures and is working closely with relevant agencies to safeguard lives, infrastructure and airport operations.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is establishing a temporary Control Tower to enable the safe restoration of flight operations as soon as possible.

Chronicle NG gathered that an Air France flight en route from Paris to Lagos, which departed around 3pm, has turned back to Paris amid the disruption.
