Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has praised Alex Otti for what he described as “transformational leadership” in Abia State.

Osinbajo spoke on Wednesday during a visit to the governor’s office in Umuahia, a visit that coincided with Otti’s birthday.

Commending Otti’s performance, Osinbajo said the governor has made public service “worthwhile”, noting that many leaders fail to fulfil campaign promises after assuming office.

“Sometimes you wonder whether, after all the efforts to get into office, leaders are able to fulfil their promises,” Osinbajo said.

“But in your case, you have done not just what you promised, but even more. You have made public service worthwhile.”

The former vice president said he had seen tangible evidence of progress within a short period, adding that Otti had met and even exceeded public expectations.

Osinbajo specifically applauded Otti’s social welfare reforms, particularly the signing of the Senior Citizens’ Law, describing it as compassionate and socially responsible.

He also lauded ongoing road infrastructure projects and improved connectivity across Abia, saying they demonstrate results-driven governance.

“Governance is about the people, their welfare, their safety and their peace of mind. If you enter office for any other reason, you miss the essence of leadership,” he said.

In his response, Otti thanked Osinbajo for the visit, describing him as a brother, friend and mentor. He clarified that the gathering was not a formal birthday celebration, noting that he rarely marks such occasions publicly while in office.

The governor said his administration’s achievements in 32 months, though modest, have been impactful.

“We are grateful to the men and women who stay awake so that our people can sleep in peace,” Otti said.

He reiterated that governance must prioritise the welfare, safety and peace of mind of citizens.

Otti also recalled early efforts to tackle insecurity in some local government areas allegedly controlled by non-state actors, stating that order has since been restored. He commended security agencies for maintaining peace across the state.

Representatives of financial institutions, including Access Bank, First Bank of Nigeria, and United Bank for Africa, also commended the governor’s leadership and wished him continued success.
