Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday swore in Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa as Chairman of Agege Local Government, encouraging him to promote grassroots development and link his administration with the state’s development program.

The swearing-in ceremony, which included the appointment of Toyin Adejimiwa as Permanent Secretary, was conducted at Lagos House in Ikeja.

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, the son of Mudasiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has served as council chairman prior to his confirmation and formal inauguration.

Sanwo-Olu addressed the freshly sworn-in officials, describing local government as the tier closest to the people and emphasizing the importance of visible, responsive, and empathetic leadership.

He advised the Agege council chairman to govern inclusively, avoid divisive tendencies, and focus on providing measurable achievements to citizens, pointing out that discipline and performance remained the benchmarks for leadership and growth in Lagos State.

The governor also recognized the attendance of retiring permanent secretaries at the ceremony, calling them outstanding public servants whose legacies continue to inspire the state’s civil service.

Sanwo-Olu welcomed Adejimiwa and Obasa on behalf of the Lagos State government and people, expressing confidence that they would uphold the trust placed in them and make substantial contributions to the state’s advancement.

In their comments, Adejimiwa and Obasa thanked the governor for putting his trust in them and promised to safeguard the core principles and standards of public service in Lagos State.

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa had been confirmed as substantive chairman, following the departure of Tunde Azeez, the prior council chairman, due to severe health issues. Azeez’s resignation letter was read at plenary in the Agege Council Chamber, and councillors unanimously approved Obasa, who had been acting in the position.

Obasa had previously expressed interest in running for chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections but was initially dropped due to opposition to his candidacy.
