Fulani leaders under the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the southern part of Kaduna State have pledged to work with security agencies to tackle insecurity in the zone.
The Fulani leaders made the commitment at a meeting convened by MACBAN on Sunday in Kafanchan, headquarters of Jema’a Local Government Area.
Speaking at the meeting, the Southern Kaduna Zonal Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Mato Yahaya, stated that it had become imperative for the group to seek solutions to the security challenges bedeviling the area.
“We cannot stand idly by and allow insecurity to take firm root in our communities.
“Therefore, I urge us all to be frank in our submissions and suggest practical ways of resolving the security problems facing us,” he added.
Yahaya advised attendees to foster peaceful coexistence between Fulani herders and other residents.
In his remarks, the Kaduna State MACBAN Chairman, Alhaji Abdulhamid Albarka, said the conference was convened to garner input from local Fulani leaders and send the same to security agencies.
Albarka asked the leaders to expose criminal elements in their communities to avoid accusations of cooperation.
“If we don’t fish them out, they will give us a bad name, and we don’t want that at all,” he noted.
Alhaji Hassan Tugga, MACBAN’s National Organizing Secretary and a native of the zone, stated that the organization was dedicated to maintaining the relative peace in the area.
Tugga asked community leaders to report any suspicious individuals or activities in their areas to the appropriate authorities.
He also urged the media to provide accurate and balanced reporting on the security situation in the zone.
Others who spoke stressed the importance of herders obtaining farmer permission before grazing on farmlands where crops had been harvested.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the conference was attended by Fulani leaders from Southern Kaduna’s eight local government districts.
