A Federal High Court in Abuja has thrown out a lawsuit filed by former Binance Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigran Gambaryan, who accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of unlawful and prolonged detention.
Delivering judgement on Thursday, 27 November 2025, Justice Umar Mohammed ruled that the court would not use a fundamental rights application to “interfere” with the Nigerian government’s ongoing investigation into alleged foreign exchange breaches and money-laundering activities linked to the Binance platform.
Gambaryan, who dragged both the EFCC and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to court, sought compensation for what he described as unjust detention by security agencies probing the Federal Government’s allegations against the crypto exchange.
During the hearing, EFCC counsel Olanrewaju Adeola insisted the detention was lawful and tied directly to charges of money laundering and FX violations. He dismissed Gambaryan’s suit as “a gross abuse of court processes”.
The court agreed—formally rejecting the application and clearing the way for authorities to continue their investigation.
