Kabiru Turaki, the newly elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has promised to restore discipline and return the party to its grassroots, declaring that the era of impunity is over.

Turaki emerged chairman on Saturday at the PDP national convention in Ibadan, where he secured 1,516 votes during the exercise held at the Adamasingba Stadium.

In his acceptance speech, the former minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs said he fully understands the weight of the mandate given to the new National Working Committee, adding that the party must immediately reconnect with Nigerians.

He assured members that the new leadership would unveil its guiding principles and operational blueprint in the coming days, with a commitment to “hit the ground running” from day one.

“Our party is at a crossroads, but we are up to the task,” Turaki said. “The cross you have given us means you will watch us take it to the Nigerian people — and that we shall do.”

Turaki insisted that the PDP remains the only major political party in Nigeria that has preserved its original identity since inception, attributing this to its deep roots among citizens.

“This is the party of the Nigerian people,” he said. “Make no mistake about it — we are returning the party to you. There will be no more impunity.
