The Plateau State Government has conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of a sad railway accident that occurred at the Phototek Junction in Jos South Local Government Area’s abattoir community.
The accident which involved a passenger train travelling from Bukuru to Jos, resulted in the death of a tricycle rider and another passenger when it collided with a tricycle that attempted to cross the railway line on Wednesday.
In a statement released on Thursday, the state Ministry of Transportation, led by Commissioner Davou Gyang, described the incident as a tragic and painful reminder of the need for strict adherence to traffic rules and safety measures around rail crossings.
The Commissioner expressed the ministry’s heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.
“We mourn with the families affected by this sad event. It is indeed a painful loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” the statement partly read.
The Commissioner said that the Ministry is working closely with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other relevant agencies to undertake a full investigation of the incident and prevent similar incidents in the future.
He appealed to vehicles, tricycle operators, and pedestrians to always respect safety signs and signals at railway crossings, saying that disregard for such restrictions endangers lives.
“Hon. Gyang reaffirmed the commitment of the Plateau State Government to enhancing transportation safety through effective public education, enforcement of traffic laws, and improvement of safety infrastructure across the state,” the statement added.
