    Amusan leads 15-athlete Nigerian contingent to World Athletics Championships

    ‎Tobi Amusan will be leading a team of 15 athletes to represent Nigeria in nine events at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

    According to the list released by the National Sports Commission (NSC), Nigeria will compete in nine events at the championship, comprising six track and three field events respectively.

    Expectedly, Amusan, the 100m hurdles world champion, will be seeking to win medals alongside established star Ese Brume, who won silver at the 2022 championship and is the first African to win two Long Jump medals at the World Athletics Championships.

    Obiageri Amaechi, US-born athlete, will represent Nigeria in the discuss event, as seven women athletes will be representing the country in Tokyo.

    Israel Okon, 18-year-old national men’s 100m champion, is one of eight male athletes to represent Nigeria at the Tokyo competition.

    The exciting prospect stormed to a 10.04s finish in Yaba to announce his arrival on the 100m scene.

    He will be joined in Tokyo by Samuel Ogazi, another 18-year-old sprinter, who has an accomplished record in the junior category.

    Ogazi won three gold medals at the 2023 Commonwealth youth games, and will race in the 400m event.

    Others on the list include Kanyinsola Ajayi, deposed national 100m champion, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, the 32-year-old shot put veteran.

    In a press statement on Thursday, the NSC charged the athletes urged to bring glory to the nation.

    ‎The 2025 World Athletics Championships will hold from September 13–21.

    • ‎ Kayinsola Ajayi – 100m
    • ‎ Israel Sunday Okon – 100m
    • ‎  Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike – 200m
    • ‎ Samuel Ogazi – 400m
    • ‎ Chidi Okezie – 400m
    • ‎ Ezekiel Nathaniel – 400m Hurdles
    • ‎ Charles Godfred – Long Jump
    • ‎ Chukwuebuka Enekwechi – Shot Put

    Women:

    • ‎ Rosemary Chukwuma – 100m
    • ‎ Tobiloba Amusan – 100m Hurdles
    • ‎ Ese Brume – Long Jump
    • ‎ Prestina Ochonogor – Long Jump
    • ‎ Obiageri Amaechi – Discus
    • ‎ Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons – Discus
    • ‎ Oyesade Olatoye – Hammer Throw
