Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of scores of people, including Nigerian soldiers, in the latest Boko Haram attack on Darajamal, Borno State.

Darajamal, in Borno State’s Bama Local Government Area, was attacked on Friday evening by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, who killed more than 60 persons, including civilians and military personnel.

According to preliminary accounts, numerous homes were burned down, and an unknown number of residents were abducted.

In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku called the incident “senseless violence” and a sorrowful reminder of the high price Nigerians continue to pay in the fight against terrorism.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic killing of scores of people, including gallant soldiers, in the recent Boko Haram attack on Darajamal, Borno State. This senseless violence is a painful reminder of the heavy price our people continue to pay in the face of terror,” Atiku’s statement partly read.

He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, the people of Borno State, and Governor Babagana Zulum, whom he praised for promptly visiting the community to sympathize with the devastated inhabitants.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved families, the resilient people of Borno, and Governor Zulum, whose swift compassion in visiting the affected community is commendable. May Almighty Allah grant the departed Al-Jannah Firdaus and comfort their loved ones,” he added.

Atiku, who was also the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections, stressed the need for national unity and renewed commitment to defeating terrorism.

“As a nation, we must rise to confront this menace with unity and renewed resolve. The sacrifices of our soldiers and civilians must inspire stronger community security, deeper collaboration, and unwavering commitment to peace,” he concluded.

Borno, the heart of Boko Haram’s 15-year insurgency, has seen fresh attacks in recent months, despite military efforts to secure liberated regions.

To avoid additional tragedy, the recent incident has revived requests for improved information, increased troop support, and stronger communication between security services and local people.
