Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, making him the Magpies’ fourth senior addition of the summer.

“The 24-year-old becomes the Magpies’ fourth first team addition of the summer after penning a long-term deal at St. James’ Park,” the club announced on their website, though details of the contract length and fee were not disclosed.

Reports in British media suggest Newcastle paid £39 million, with a further £4 million in potential add-ons.

Ramsey, a product of Aston Villa’s academy, made 167 appearances for the club. Last season, despite battling a hamstring injury midway through the campaign, he featured in 46 matches, including 10 in the Champions League, though many of those were substitute appearances.

The move comes just after Newcastle and Villa played out a 0-0 draw on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, with Ramsey absent from Villa’s squad.

    • Newcastle held by 10-man Aston Villa without striker Isak

“It’s been a mad two or three days, but I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started,” Ramsey told Newcastle’s official website.

So far this summer, Newcastle have also added Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and Malick Thiaw, though the club has faced challenges in securing other targets. Star striker Alexander Isak was left out of Saturday’s squad after reacting to Newcastle’s decision to reject a bid from Liverpool.

Manager Eddie Howe praised the latest addition, saying, “Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad. His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football.”

Ramsey was also part of England’s Under-21 European Championship-winning squad in 2023, where he played alongside current Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.
