    Tobi Amusan wins fifth national title in Lagos

    The women’s 100m hurdles world record holder, Tobi Amusan, cruised to victory in the event at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s National Trials at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

    Amusan fired quickly off the blocks at the Yabatech sports complex and wheeled away to clinch the first position in a time of 12.57 s for her fifth title.

    The 28-year-old finished ahead of rising star Adaobi Tabugbo, who came second in a time of 13.03 s, while Faith Osamuyi placed third in a time of 13.36 s.

    The win marked her dominance in the women’s 100 m hurdles event, as she continues her preparations for the forthcoming World Athletics Championships scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, in September.

    Meanwhile, Gafar Badmus won the men’s 400m national title in 45.71 seconds, beating out Ezekiel Asuquo in 46.29 seconds and David Akhalu in 46.91 seconds.

    The women’s category saw an upset when multiple champion Patience Okon-George was disqualified in the final.

    Favour Onyah, the African U-20 champion, won in 52.69 seconds, with Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna finishing second and third, respectively.

    In the women’s 100m, African U-20 champion Chioma Nweke defeated Olayinka Olajide to win her first national championship in 11.27 seconds. Olajide ran 11.39 seconds to finish second, with Iyanuoluwa Bada coming in third at 11.45.

    The reigning National Sports Festival champion told reporters, “I feel very amazing. It feels good to become a national champion.”

    Amusan added, “I have to go back and try to qualify for the Commonwealth Games next year.”
