The first lady of Anambra State, Nonye Soludo, has vowed to closely monitor the case of a man who reportedly set fire to his wife in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, till full justice is done.

The governor’s wife made this public after receiving information about the viral occurrence from the Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, and her health counterpart, Dr. Afam Obidike, whom she directed to attend the scene right away.

In response to the incident, which she described as “gruesome and evil,” Soludo promised to guarantee that the case is resolved fairly.

Soludo insisted that “full justice must be made to take prime place in the whole process.”

Soludo underlined the administration’s strong position against domestic abuse, defining such acts as serious crimes.

“No one found guilty of such offences would be let to walk free,” she stated.

Soludo reiterated her appeal for social reform, emphasising the need for a comprehensive approach to tackling drug misuse and related issues.

She noted that she was disappointed by the rise in domestic violence and abuse.

The governor’s wife highlighted the need for urgent support for the victim’s five children, stating, “The state government will now find the best approach to take care of the five children, whom, she said, should be in the most careful manner.”

The woman, Chioma Nwaka, a mother of five boys, was shown in a viral, gruesome video on social media on Tuesday attempting to escape while covered in third-degree burns on her torso and other body parts.

An eyewitness recounted the horrific event, saying, “The victim’s husband, Obiozor Nwaka, a middle-aged man who, alongside their five sons, depended on the wife’s petty business to survive, emptied a can of fuel on the woman and immediately set her on fire over a little family misunderstanding.

“It was passersby and neighbours who managed to put out the fire, though it had dealt significant burns on the victim,” they said.

Chioma was transported to a medical facility in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, where she was confirmed dead at 3 a.m. Wednesday.
