The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has warned organizers of public events to prioritize safety and notify authorities in advance, following a tragic stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, that left 10 people dead and eight injured.

The incident occurred around 6:30 AM on Saturday during a food distribution event for vulnerable and elderly individuals. A crowd of over a thousand people had gathered, leading to a chaotic stampede.

“A stampede ensued, resulting in the loss of 10 lives, including four children, and injuries to eight others. Four of the injured have been treated and discharged, while the others are still receiving medical care,” said SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer.

The FCT Police Rapid Response Squad and Joint Task Force were immediately deployed to evacuate the crowd and restore order. Commissioner of Police CP Olatunji Disu visited the injured in the hospital, offering condolences to the bereaved families and support to the survivors.

“The FCT Police Command expresses its profound sorrow over the tragic incident and urges the public to work with us to prevent such avoidable tragedies,” Adeh added.

To ensure public safety, the Police Command has mandated that all organizations, religious bodies, and individuals planning large gatherings must inform the Police in advance for the deployment of adequate security. “Failure to comply will hold organizers accountable for any negligence,” Adeh warned.

Residents have been encouraged to report emergencies or concerns via the FCT Control Room numbers: 0803 200 3913 and 0806 032 1234.

The Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the Territory.
