A deadly car accident at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll gate in Lagos killed three young people and sparked outrage over how the police handled the situation.

The accident, which occurred at 1:00 a.m. on Monday, involved two cars carrying ccd eight passengers.

A social media user, Dr. Love #Drweloveu, who revealed information of the tragedy on Monday via X, wrote, “An 18-year-old motorist killed three of his buddies in an accident. Police apprehended the last two survivors. The driver was roughly 18 years old and didn’t have a driver’s license.”

The crash resulted in rapid and catastrophic repercussions.

According to him, both drivers emerged unscathed from the wreckage.

He said, “The two drivers from both cars came out unharmed, no scratch on their bodies.” They came out hale and hearty, while their friends lay dead.”

However, spectators were critical of the aftermath of the collision and how the police that arrived on the scene handled the matter.

Dr. Love, describing the scene, said, “Instead of helping, the police who arrived at the scene handcuffed the survivors, acting like they didn’t care about the bodies on the ground.”

This action apparently startled spectators, especially local elders, who encouraged the police to prioritise the victims’ care.

“People in the area, including elders, couldn’t believe what they were seeing. They begged the police to focus on taking the dead to the hospital or mortuary instead of arresting those who had just lost their friends.

“After many complaints, the police finally let them go, and the crowd began trying to help, searching for the families of those who had died. It was a deeply sad night, filled with loss and a feeling that things should have been handled differently.”

A dispatch rider on the site gave a terrifying story, adding that one of them was still breathing when he carried him out but stopped after approximately 10 minutes.

However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, reacting to the report of the accident in a statement on X, said, “The police arrived at the scene and took occupants of the vehicles to the hospital. Unfortunately, three were certified dead, and the police took their bodies to Yaba mortuary.”

“The police equally took the driver at fault to the hospital for medical attention and left him in the custody of his family after they were contacted,” he added.

He also assured that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
