Nigerian family regrets move to Canada amid economic hardship

A growing number of newly landed immigrants in Canada are expressing regret over their decision to relocate, citing a high cost of living, insufficient wages, and economic disillusionment.

One of such immigrant, a Nigerian man who moved his family to Canada in search of a better life, now finds himself facing unforeseen challenges.

After arriving in Canada, he quickly realized that his wages, which were intended to support his family, were barely enough to cover rent. “Back home, my income was enough to care for the entire family,” he shared with a Canadian musician and X.com user Eric St-Pierre, who highlighted his story. His situation has become so dire that he spent his first few months starving so that his wife and children could eat.

As the financial strain mounted, his wife, who had initially hoped to focus on raising their children, was forced to seek work out of necessity. Now, both she and her husband are left questioning their decision to leave Nigeria. “Both him and his wife are regretting coming here,” St-Pierre continued in his post. Worse yet, the family cannot afford to return home, having spent their life savings to make the move to Canada.

Stories like these, according to St-Pierre, are becoming “all too common thanks to the Liberals’ morally bankrupt policies.” The Canadian government’s immigration policies, coupled with the country’s rising real estate and rent prices, have led many to feel trapped in what some call an economic “ponzi scheme” preying on newcomers.

    • No more work permits for visitors who apply from inside Canada

Social media users quickly responded to the post, with one user, @TruthSeek01011, noting, “Stuck in Canada is a real thing. People come for a better life only to realize it’s all a giant scam and then can’t afford to get home.”

Another user, Susanne Bard (@bard_susanne), called for government intervention, suggesting, “This man and his family should be repatriated to their home country. A ticket is a whole lot cheaper than welfare or other social programs.”

Owen Robinson (@rocinanterides) expressed sympathy for immigrants in similar situations: “This is why I blame the government, not the immigrants. They were sold a lie. This is a tragic story, but sadly it’s not unique.”

However, not everyone agrees. Another user, Lisette (@lisette09280142), commented, “Tell them to leave, but they won’t. Canada is a paradise compared to Nigeria or Africa for that matter.”

Many newcomers to Canada, such as this Nigerian family, hoped for a fresh start and a better quality of life. Yet, as the economic climate worsens, some are left feeling that the grass may not be greener after all.
