Two Kogi State Polytechnic students in Lokoja died after breathing fumes from a power generator put near their apartment’s window overnight.

SP William Ovye Aya, the state police public relations officer, confirmed this during a phone call with our correspondent on Thursday.

Aya revealed that the deceased were Bilikisu Eleojo, aged 20, and Ibrahim Haliru.

According to him, the generating set was positioned near the victims’ windows, and they fell asleep and died before dawn.

Neighbours apparently discovered the duo’s lifeless bodies in the apartment early Thursday morning.

“There were three students from Kogi State Polytechnic inside the room. One Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo, 20 years old, Ibrahim Haliru, and Mercy Ojochegbe.

“When they slept inside their room, a generating set was switched on close to the window of their apartment.

“They all slept off and inhaled carbon monoxide as a result of the generating set that was switched on.

“Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo and Ibrahim Haliru were already dead when neighbours discovered the sad incident in the morning, while Mercy Ojochegbe, who was still breathing, was immediately rushed to the hospital.

“The incident was reported at the ‘B’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force Lokoja, and the investigation is ongoing.”

He urged residents to be cautious to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning in their houses.

In December, a young man and his girlfriend died after inhaling fumes from a generator set that had been locked inside their flat overnight in Delta State‘s Ugborikoko town.

According to reports, the man had recently attended his girlfriend’s birthday celebration at a nightclub with his lover.

It was reported that after the party, the two left the club and went to the lady’s business, where they put on the generator set before sleeping off and perished before dawn.
