Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, and he is currently being detained in their custody.

According to reports, Emefiele is currently being interrogated at the national headquarters of the anti-graft agency in Jabi, Abuja.

He was picked up by EFCC operatives Thursday night, less than an hour after he regained his freedom from the dungeon of the Department of State Services.

According to reports, the EFCC is probing Emefiele over alleged impropriety during his term as the head of the apex bank.

It was further gathered that fresh charges may be filed against Mr. Emefiele by the EFCC.

At the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, could not be reached for official confirmation.

Chronicle NG reports that the former CBN governor has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office.

He was thereafter asked to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, then deputy governor, operations directorate at the apex bank.

He was then requested to hand over his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the apex bank’s then-deputy governor, operations directorate.

The DSS confirmed the next day that Emefiele was being held for “investigative purposes.”

On July 25, he was arraigned in a federal high court in Lagos on a two-count allegation of “illegal possession” of firearms and was given bail in the sum of N20 million.

The two-count charge was later dismissed on August 17 after the Federal Government retracted it.

However, a new 20-count charge was filed against him for an alleged conspiracy to commit procurement fraud, among other things.

The arraignment has been postponed twice, and Emefiele is said to have sought a plea deal with the federal government.

Emefiele was obliged to quit as CBN governor and disgorge some assets under the proposed accord.
