President Bola Tinubu and other notable Nigerians have commended the Super Falcons for their top performance during their campaign at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, from the group stage to the knockout stage, which ended with a penalty shootout loss to England after a hard-fought 120 minutes.

Chronicle NG reports that England beat Nigeria in the Women’s World Cup in a last-16 penalty shootout on Monday, with Chloe Kelly scoring the decisive spot-kick after a nerve-jangling 0-0 draw over 120 minutes.

“I must commend the effort by our Super Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Your brilliant performance did not go unnoticed, despite the final outcome. You made Nigeria proud on the global stage”, Tinubu wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“We may have lost to England in a penalty shootout, but the Super Falcons have every reason to hold their heads high”, Atiku noted on X.

“Despite the heartbreak of the penalty shootout, I am proud of the Super Falcons for their incredible journey in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. And you ladies should be proud of what you have achieved,” Bukola Saraki stated on X.

“The resilience of our Nigerian team against England must be commended, irrespective of the end result. We are super proud of you all”, Emeka Ihedioha wrote on X

“We are proud of the performance of the Super Falcons. Our sports administrators should do more to motivate our players”, Shehu Sani said.

The Super Falcons best performance was at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they reached the quarterfinals.

The nine-time African champions are also one of the few teams in the world and the only African team to have qualified for almost all editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Throughout history, the team has qualified for seven of the last nine FIFA World Cups, with this year’s edition included, missing only the 2006 and 2022 editions.

Nigeria has reached the round of 16 on four occasions, including this year’s edition.
