Manchester United will decide on the future of striker Mason Greenwood before their first Premier League match of the season against Wolves on August 14.
On February 2, a number of serious allegations against Greenwood, including attempted rape and violence, were dismissed.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, crucial witnesses have withdrawn and new evidence has emerged.
It meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.
Greenwood, 21, was “relieved” at the moment, according to a statement made by his representatives.
However, United later said that they would conduct their own inquiry.
Greenwood has been unavailable for selection since then and has not been seen at the club’s Carrington training facility. His contract with United expires in June 2025.
When asked about the situation before the start of United’s current tour of the United States, manager Erik ten Hag indicated he had expressed his thoughts but that it was up to others at the club to make a decision.
It is believed that the process is nearing completion, with an announcement expected before the Wolves game.
