Luton Town FC have secured promotion to the English Premier League after defeating Coventry City FC on penalties today in the promotion play-off final.

Luton, who finished third in the Championship table behind Burnley and Sheffield United, saw off Sunderland in the semi-final to reach the final at Wembley.

Coventry, on the other hand, finished fifth in the league table and got their place in the final by defeating Middlesbrough.

The match, which ended 1-1, saw Rob Edwards team take the lead in the 23rd minute courtesy of a goal from Jordan Clark, despite having two goals disallowed and their captain carried out of the field after collapsing.

Coventry, however, equalized in the second half, which saw the game eventually go into extra time.

Luton’s joy was short-lived when they thought they had won it minutes before the final whistle; however, Joe Taylor’s goal was ruled out for a handball in the process.

A perfect six penalty kicks were enough to gain victory for the Hatters, who will now compete in the English Premier League for the first time since 1992.

This victory will see Burnley, Sheffield United, and Luton Town play in the top flight of English football next season.
