The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday dismissed the policemen following an investigation into their professional conduct and use of firearms.

In a statement communicated by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Public Relations Officer and obtained by Chronicle NG, the trio were in the northern state of Kano.

Following complaints and findings on video evidence of high-handedness, unprofessional conduct, and misuse of firearms against some policemen from Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 1, Kano, widely circulated on social media on Friday, April 7, 2023, and a follow-up orderly room trial of the affected policemen by the Force Provost Marshal, three officers from SPU Base 1, Kano, have been dismissed for the offences of discreditable conduct, misuse of firearms, abuse of power, gross indiscipline, and wastage of live ammunition.

The three policemen, Inspr. Dahiru Shuaibu, Sgt. Abdullahi Badamasi, and Sgt. Isah Danladi, were assigned to accompany a musician in Kano.

On April 7, 2023, while on duty in Kahutu Village, Katsina State, the officers fired shots from their official firearms into the air, despite police policy against firing in the air, standard operating procedure, and relevant force orders, and disregarding the potential risk to the crowd, which included children.

The behaviour was not only illegal and unprofessional, but it was also humiliating to the force and the country as a whole.

The Nigeria Police Force cautions all officers to ensure that they carry out their responsibilities in accordance with existing laws in order to avoid violating its provisions and incurring the associated penalties.

Supervising officers have also been entrusted with ensuring that their men get ongoing and extensive lectures to ensure that they are well-versed in the relevant standard operating procedures.
