Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has stepped down as the director general of the Labour Party presidential campaign council.
In his resignation letter on Tuesday, he urged the party to appoint a replacement that will focus on ensuring that the presidential candidate emerges winner in the 2023 election.
In a letter addressed to Labour Party presidential candidate, Okupe said that he said, “You will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my personal travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian legal system to pursue same.
“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.
“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions.
Okupe was on Monday convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for N702 million money laundering.
The presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu gave an option of N500, 000 in each of the counts, amounting to N13 million, which must be paid before 4:30 pm on same day.
