A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit off the northern California coast on Sunday, inflicting no recorded damage or casualties, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), 108 kilometres (67 miles) west of Petrolia, a town of around 1,000 inhabitants in rural Humboldt County, according to the USGS.
According to the USGS, a few other communities in northern California’s sparsely inhabited area experienced minor shaking as well.
In California, quakes are common. A magnitude 6.4 quake struck Northern California barely 5 km (3 miles) offshore in December, wounding at least a dozen people and killing two.
