On Monday, another 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan, bringing the death toll from Saturday’s quake to nearly 2,000.

The latest quakes were confirmed by the US Geological Survey and locals.

“It was quite intense,” a doctor in the area described Monday’s quake to newsmen. ”

“People sought refuge in parks, open spaces, and gardens.”

The fatal earthquake on Saturday, according to the health worker, has had a significant impact on people’s mental health. “Most of the patients are those who have mental shocks,” he said.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Herat province’s Zindah Jan area over the weekend devastated at least 13 communities.

Rescue teams and residents from nearby neighborhoods were still attempting to recover bodies from beneath the rubble.

The Saturday quakes in the west of the country hit 35 km (20 miles) northwest of the city of Herat, with one of 6.3 magnitude, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

They were among the world’s deadliest quakes in a year when tremors in Turkey and Syria killed an estimated 50,000 people in February.

The UN Coordination Office for Humanitarian Affairs reported 1,023 deaths and 1,663 injuries, with over 11,000 people affected by the catastrophe.
