The Southern Political Progressives Amalgamation Forum has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to carefully consider its choice of vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that the decision could significantly influence the party’s electoral prospects against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement jointly signed by Comrades Anga Fidelis, Eniafe Ayomide, and Johnson Iheanacho, the group said the ADC should prioritise a running mate with broad acceptability and proven electoral appeal across the South.

The forum was reacting to reports linking former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, with the party’s vice-presidential slot alongside the ADC’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

According to the group, the party should adopt a strategy capable of strengthening its support base across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

It argued that the selection of a running mate should be guided by considerations such as national appeal, political experience, grassroots support, and the capacity to complement the presidential candidate.

“The choice of a vice-presidential candidate is a strategic decision that could shape the outcome of the election. The ADC should ensure that whoever emerges enjoys broad acceptance and can contribute meaningfully to the party’s electoral success,” the statement said.

The forum maintained that the party’s objective should be to present a ticket capable of attracting widespread support from Nigerians seeking an alternative political platform in 2027.

It also advised the ADC leadership to ensure that its internal decisions promote unity and strengthen confidence among party members and supporters.

The group stressed that building a broad coalition across regions and interest groups would be critical if the party hopes to mount a successful challenge in the next presidential election.

“The ADC has an opportunity to present a united and inclusive ticket that can inspire confidence among Nigerians. The party should place national interest and electoral viability above every other consideration,” it added.

The forum expressed confidence that, with careful planning, internal cohesion, and a widely acceptable ticket, the ADC could improve its chances of mounting a competitive challenge in the 2027 presidential election.

Neither the ADC nor Amaechi had publicly responded to the forum’s position at the time of filing this report.
