The Kebbi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the ongoing investigation and prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, are politically motivated and aimed at weakening the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement jointly signed by the party’s State Chairman, Engr. Sufiyanu Bala, and the Chairman of the ADC Elders Forum in Kebbi State, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Sambawa, the party maintained that while it supports the lawful investigation and prosecution of anyone found wanting, it would not condone what it described as the use of state institutions to intimidate opposition figures.

The party alleged that the Federal Government was deploying anti-graft agencies and other state institutions to suppress opposition politicians in a bid to make opposition politics unattractive or unbearable ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to the statement, “No amount of political persecution, suppression, blackmail or intimidation will take our minds and eyes away from the big goal, which is to defeat the APC government at the polls in the 2027 general elections.”

The ADC further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating a politically motivated campaign against Malami, whom it described as the party’s leader in Kebbi State and its governorship candidate.

The party argued that the circumstances surrounding Malami’s arrest, detention and prosecution indicated a predetermined agenda, alleging that his properties were searched in his absence and that the value of his family’s assets had been exaggerated to damage his reputation.

It also contended that Malami had acquired assets and built a professional career before his appointment as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, insisting that the allegations against him should ultimately be determined by the courts.

The ADC, however, expressed confidence in the judicial process, saying it believed the appellate courts would ensure justice in the matter.

The party reaffirmed its support for Malami, declaring that its members across Kebbi State would remain united behind him despite what it described as sustained harassment, intimidation and media trial.

“We are solidly behind our party leader and governorship candidate, come rain or shine,” the statement said, adding that no amount of pressure would weaken the party’s resolve to mobilise Nigerians to vote the APC out of office in the 2027 elections.

The ADC also described the challenges facing its members and leaders as sacrifices necessary in its campaign to, according to the statement, “uproot dictatorship” and restore democratic governance in the country.
