A 17-year-old teenager has been apprehended following the shooting of three individuals in New York City’s Times Square early Saturday.

Gunfire sounded out around 01:20 EDT (05:20 GMT) between West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, behind towering billboards in one of the world’s largest tourist destinations.

The teenager has not been identified by authorities, and charges are pending.

Police say a 19-year-old guy was shot in the foot, a 65-year-old man was struck in the left leg, and an 18-year-old lady was wounded in the neck.

They were all admitted to the hospital in stable condition.

The shooting in Times Square began during a disagreement outside Raising Cane’s chicken restaurant.

According to the New York Police Department, it began as a quarrel. A firearm was found at the scene.

A gunman opened fire on an office block in Midtown Manhattan last month, killing four people.

The alleged shooter, a 27-year-old Nevada resident, was believed to be targeting the National Football League offices.

According to NYPD, the city has had record low levels of gun violence in recent months.

The incident occurred three months before the New York mayor’s race, and as President Donald Trump sends federal officers onto the streets of Washington, DC, to crack down on crimes committed by young people.

On Friday, Trump directed federal officers to the streets of Washington, DC, to combat what he described as “totally out of control” crime rates.

Washington, DC’s homicide rate is relatively high compared to other US cities, with 98 such deaths documented this year. Homicides in the US capital have increased since a decade ago.

However, official data from January show that Washington DC had its lowest overall violent crime figures in 30 years, including carjacking, assault, and robbery.

On Saturday, Trump announced that Truth Social would hold a news conference at the White House on Monday, “which will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, DC”.
