For various offences, which include sexual harassment of students, age falsification, fraud, and extortion, the management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo State, has dismissed 13 of its employees.
The affected staff, who were both academic and non-academic, were dismissed after a unanimous decision by the university’s disciplinary committee.
Prof. Asomwan Adagbonyin, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, stated this when presenting the report of the University Staff Disciplinary Committee to the Chairman of the Special Intervention Team, Mr. Andrew Olotu, at Government House, Benin City, saying the decision to revoke the appointment of the alleged errant staff was reached following their being found guilty of the offences they believed to have been committed.
Adagbonyi revealed that the affected employees came from the faculties of basic medical science, medical laboratory sciences, nursing, engineering, law, and political science, along with the former director of the university’s farm.
He further stated that after the disciplinary committee had given the errant staff a fair hearing, they recommended that “the criminal aspect of the disengaged staff offences should be reported to security operatives.”
The Vice Chancellors stated that out of the 209 disciplinary cases received by the disciplinary committee, 132 had been concluded while 77 were yet to be concluded.
Adagbonyin stated that the head of the nursing science department was recommended for dismissal after he was found guilty of extorting N32,000 and N52,000 from students and that a lecturer who was charged with sexual harassment was also removed.
Speaking on the lecturer who was dismissed for sexual harassment, Adagbonyin said the lecturer claimed to simply make passes at the student, “but he went to the said girl’s church to plead for forgiveness. The victim has been protected and reassigned to another lecturer.”
Mr. Andrew Olotu, Chairman of the Committee, while receiving the report on behalf of the AAU Special Intervention Team, pledged to look over all the specifics of the report and carefully scrutinize them to make an informed final decision.Ambrose Alli University (AAU)
