10-man Monaco stun PSG as Minamino scores winner

Takumi Minamino scored the game’s only goal as Monaco defeated reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

The 30-year-old Japanese international, who formerly played for Liverpool, scored just past the halfway mark of the second half at the Stade Louis II, handing PSG their second domestic defeat of the season.

Monaco hung on in the final stages, including seven minutes of added time, after former Paris defender Thilo Kehrer was sent off in the 80th minute.

It is a surprising outcome, with Monaco stopping a sequence of three successive Ligue 1 losses that had seen them fall behind PSG and the other elite teams.

They are currently provisionally sixth, seven points behind the capital side, who have just lost once in Ligue 1 this season, away to Marseille in September.

PSG is at the top of the rankings for the time being, with 30 points from 14 games, but the Champions League winners from last season are only two points ahead of nearest challengers Marseille and Lens, and they might lose their lead later on Saturday.

Marseille, who won 2-1 at home to Newcastle United in the Champions League midweek, can go first with a victory over Toulouse tomorrow at the Velodrome.

Lens will also have the chance to overtake PSG by winning three points at Angers on Sunday.

Minamino controlled an Aleksandr Golovin cross and finished beyond Lucas Chevalier to open the scoring, and Monaco kept their lead even after German center-back Kehrer was sent off after a VAR review for a foul on Ibrahim Mbaye.

Paul Pogba made another quick cameo appearance off the bench for the hosts, a week after making his first competitive appearance in over two years following a doping suspension.

PSG, who beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 in the Champions League on Wednesday, were far from full strength, with Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all out.

Furthermore, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele only played for a little more than 30 minutes as a substitute as he continues to regain fitness after an injury-plagued season.

The France attacker was unable to have a decisive impact on proceedings, and PSG have now lost as many Ligue 1 games as they did in the previous two seasons combined.
