Brentford claimed a brilliant win at Aston Villa with a player sent off, denting the hosts’ Premier League title ambitions.

Dango Ouattara’s superb strike stunned Villa just minutes after Kevin Schade was sent off for putting his studs into Matty Cash’s midriff.

Tammy Abraham, who was returning, had a goal disallowed as Villa suffered their first home league defeat in over two years.

They stay third in the rankings, seven points behind champions Arsenal, while Keith Andrews’ Brentford are seventh, four points back of the top five.

Villa appeared to have taken control after striker Schade was sent off, but Ouattara found the top corner.

Abraham thought he had levelled three minutes into the second half when Caoimhin Kelleher parried Jadon Sancho’s effort, but the goal was ruled out after a four-minute video assistant referee (VAR) review because the ball had gone out before Villa attacked.

There were no late heroics, however, as Brentford defended fiercely to secure a well-deserved and superb victory.
