Shubham Chaudhuri, the World Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, has announced intentions to work with the National Identity Management Commission to enable the smooth implementation and registration of digital national IDs for all Nigerians.

The ambitious goal is to deliver a digital national ID to at least 148 million people of working age by the middle of 2024, representing a huge step towards inclusion and accessibility.

On Friday, Chaudhuri announced this during a dinner hosted by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in Abuja.

He also underlined the organisation’s commitment to ending poverty, enhancing lives, and providing jobs for the country’s youth.

Chaudhuri emphasized the need to harness digital technology to promote transformation and listed two major areas of collaboration with Nigeria to accomplish these aims.

“Our main mission here in Nigeria is to eliminate poverty, improve people’s lives, and create jobs for all Nigerian youth,” he stated. One of the areas we believe has the most promise is the use of digital technology for change. To do so, you must first obtain this digital national ID.

“One of the main partnerships we have is with NIMC to ensure the rollout of the registration so that all 213–220 million Nigerians have a digital national ID, beginning of course with all people of working age, and I believe the target for that is at least 148 million people by the middle of next year.”

“The second is assisting Nigeria in leading the broadband infrastructure for broadband connectivity because digital technologies will lead to a digital divide without broadband connectivity,” he continued. So there has been support for excellent rules and regulations that would encourage private investment in this domain and eventually fibre optic connections.

Working with states, for example, to urge them to cut right-of-way costs and fibre Cable operators have to pay more when they get the land to lay the cable. All of that is like the foundations, and the real potential comes from once you have the national ID, all of the technologies that apps that can be built on the weather to bring services to people, to people where they get people access to finance, all of that requires skills.”

Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, also spoke, revealing that the government has obtained access to around $500 million in cash to launch a local financing programme.

He stated that the effort intends to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the country’s digital industry.

“So we’ve got access to about half a billion dollars to start local funding,” he remarked.

Tijani explained the government’s intention to house local financing in Nigeria and guarantee that it supports genuine Nigerian enterprises, adding that the government will collaborate with the Bank of Industry.

He did, however, emphasise the significance of promoting and supporting Nigerian firms, saying, “We want to ensure that those businesses that will benefit are true, real Nigerian businesses.”

He went on to say that by keeping the financing local, the government hopes to support the growth and development of domestic businesses, eventually contributing to the country’s economic advancement.

The minister told the people that the first $500 million earmarked for local assistance is only the beginning. He emphasized that additional investors will be brought on board, boosting the amount of money available to help Nigerian inventors.

Minister Tijani emphasized that the government’s objective is to use this money to attract more investment and enhance resources for local enterprises.

“Part of my responsibilities include working with the BOI to ensure that the funding is domiciled locally in Nigeria, as well as working with firms that manage and invest in businesses to ensure that the businesses that will benefit are true, real Nigerian businesses,” he said.

“And what we will see is that funding is available locally, and it will grow in the coming months, and as these funds grow, we want to leverage that money as well.”

“So the government isn’t just going to put half a billion dollars in and call it a day; as we have more money, more of our innovators will have access to resources.”
