West Ham United have rejected a loan deal for Manchester United custodian Andre Onana, The Guardian reports.
The Hammers are looking for a new custodian following their summer signing. Mads Hermansen, who came from Leicester City, has struggled to impress. However, the club made it clear that Onana, who has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, is not regarded as an upgrade over their present squad.
The 29-year-old Cameroonian international lost his starting berth to Altay Bayindir this season under new United manager Ruben Amorim, and he was approached by West Ham as a possible replacement. However, the London club rejected the offer.
Onana returned to Carabao Cup action in midweek against Grimsby Town but had another difficult night as United were eliminated by the League Two club. He was partially responsible for the Mariners’ second goal after failing to deal with a cross, and United eventually lost 12-11 in penalties following a 2-2 deadlock.
West Ham, however, is aggressively looking for new targets. Talks with Hull City goalkeeper Ivor Pandur are apparently ongoing, and the club has rekindled its interest in Botafogo’s John Victor, with whom it struck an agreement in principle last summer.
Manager Graham Potter is under pressure to rectify the club’s goalkeeping woes, as Hermansen has conceded eight goals in just two league outings, three of which came from set pieces against Chelsea last weekend. Backup Alphonse Areola also struggled in a 3-2 Carabao Cup loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
