A 200-level medical student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Ifeoluwa Wisdom Akinmade, has died after reportedly ingesting a harmful substance suspected to be Sniper.

The death was announced on Monday by the University of Ibadan Medical Students Association (UIMSA) in a statement signed by its president, Folusho Olu-Adegbola, and general secretary, Babatunde Dauda.

“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother and colleague,” the association said, urging students to keep his family and loved ones in their prayers.

According to reports circulating on X, including a post by Ibadan-based influencer Hon. Jesugbemi, the incident was first communicated by the warden of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall. The warden reportedly stated that Akinmade was suspected to have taken the substance around midnight on Saturday.

He was initially rushed to a hospital within the university before being transferred to the University College Hospital (UCH), where doctors battled to save his life. He later died on Sunday evening after spending several hours in a coma.

Funmi Adetuyibi, spokesperson for UCH, confirmed the development, stating that the hospital responded promptly but the student did not survive.

As of the time of filing this report, the university management had yet to release an official statement. Efforts to reach the dean of student affairs were unsuccessful.

The tragic incident has sparked conversations online about student mental health, academic pressure and the need for stronger support systems within tertiary institutions.
