United States President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Nigeria President Bola Tinubu over his response to the deadly explosions in Maiduguri.
In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump described the situation in Nigeria as a “total disaster”, citing reports of coordinated attacks that hit key locations including a hospital, a market and a post office.
He expressed concern over the loss of innocent lives and blamed what he called weak leadership and poor security controls.
Trump also took aim at Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the United Kingdom, questioning the president’s decision to remain abroad during a national crisis.
According to him, a leader should be physically present during emergencies, working closely with security forces and citizens rather than attending diplomatic engagements overseas.
He further urged British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to advise Tinubu to return to Nigeria immediately.
The US President added that Nigeria’s challenges could be addressed through stronger border control and decisive action against terrorist groups.
Trump concluded by describing Nigeria as a great country with resilient people, while warning that citizens were being failed by inadequate focus on security.
The Nigerian government has yet to officially respond to the remarks.
