US President Donald Trump has said he is “filled with grief and anger” after the “heinous assassination” of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, a staunch ally of the US president, was shot dead at a university event in Utah on Wednesday afternoon.
Trump announced the death of the 31-year-old conservative on social media, hailing him as a “great, and even legendary” figure who was “loved and admired by all, especially me”.
In a video message, the US president said, “To my fellow Americans, I’m filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Charlie inspired millions as a patriot devoted to open debate, liberty, and America. He’s a martyr for truth, respected by youth. We take comfort he’s with God; prayers to his wife Erika and children.
This dark moment stems from radical left rhetoric demonizing conservatives like Nazis, inciting violence. It must stop now. My administration will find all responsible, including funding organizations.
From the Butler attack on me to others, this has hurt too many. Commit to free speech, rule of law, and love of God. Charlie’s voice lives on stronger. God bless America.”
Chronicle NG reported that Kirk was responding to a question during the event when a single pop was heard. Attendees captured video of the crowd yelling as Kirk recoiled in his seat and looked to reach for his neck.
