United States President Donald Trump has said several countries could deploy warships alongside the United States to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open amid rising tensions with Iran.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump said nations affected by disruptions in the strategic waterway may join the US in securing the route.
“Many countries, especially those affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending warships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe,” he wrote.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, handling a large share of global oil shipments from the Gulf to international markets. Any disruption to the route could have significant consequences for global energy prices and international trade.
Trump said he hoped major economies that rely heavily on the waterway would take part in the security effort.
He mentioned countries including China, France, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom as potential participants.
However, the US president did not specify which nations had formally agreed to deploy naval forces, and there was no immediate confirmation from allied governments about joining the proposed mission.
Trump also warned that despite what he described as “heavy damage” to Iran’s military capability, the country could still threaten shipping in the narrow waterway.
According to him, Iran could attempt limited attacks using drones, mines, or short-range missiles targeting vessels passing through the strait.
He added that the United States would continue military operations aimed at securing the route and ensuring safe passage for commercial ships.
The comments come as tensions rise across the Middle East, where security concerns around shipping routes in the Gulf have intensified amid the growing confrontation involving Iran.
Earlier in the week, Iran said it would not allow “a single litre of oil” to pass through the Strait of Hormuz for the benefit of the United States, Israel and their allies.
