A bus conveying mourners from a funeral crashed in western Kenya on Friday, killing at least 21, an official said, a day after 14 people were killed in separate plane and rail tragedies.
The latest fatal accident followed a plane disaster near Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday, in which an air ambulance crashed in a residential neighbourhood, killing six people.
The same day, local media claimed that a train collided with a bus, killing eight people.
Friday’s tragedy occurred in Kisumu County at about 5:00 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) after a bus crashed, according to local media, while returning from a funeral earlier that day.
“The vehicle lost control, veered, and rolled onto the other side of the road,” he told reporters at the scene.
“We lost 21 persons, and amongst the 21 who lost their lives were 10 women, a girl aged 10, and 10 men,” he said.
Five individuals were critically injured in the event, he added, including an eight-month-old baby who is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
The cause of the crash remained unknown, Maina said, adding that investigations were ongoing.
According to local media, the accident occurred on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road.
The East African country has a bad record in terms of road safety, with deadly crashes occurring on a regular basis.
