President Bola Tinubu has expressed sympathy with world heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, following a road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives and left the boxer injured.
In a message to Joshua on X on Monday, the president described the incident as a tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season, while praying for the repose of the deceased and a speedy recovery for the boxer.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” Tinubu said.
“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season,” he added.
Tinubu expressed sympathy for Joshua and his family as they deal with the emotional aftermath of the occurrence, stressing that the boxer’s character and commitment to the country remained great even in difficult times.
“I sympathize with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” the president said.
Calling for unity and mutual support, the president added, “In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.”
Tinubu concluded by offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery and the victims of the crash. “I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed,” he said.
Chronicle NG had earlier reported that Joshua was involved in a road accident on Monday at Makun, Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Eyewitnesses stated that the accident occurred shortly after 11am when the Lexus SUV conveying the boxer reportedly collided with a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
