President Bola Tinubu on Saturday congratulated the Super Eagles for winning the bronze medal at the 2025 African Cup of Nations, AFCON.
Tinubu commended the Nigerian national team for putting behind them the disappointment of the semi-final loss to host nation Morocco last Wednesday.
“This bronze medal surely feels good like gold,” Tinubu said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu noted that the Super Eagles players’ triumph highlighted Nigeria’s determination, persistence, and can-do mentality.
The Super Eagles defeated Egypt, the seven-time AFCON champion, in a penalty shootout after normal time in which the Nigerian squad dominated.
The President said, “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed.
“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.
“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.
“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”
The Super Eagles triumphed over Egypt’s Pharaohs 4-2 in a penalty shootout on Saturday to secure the bronze medal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a suspenseful third-place playoff at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.
The match concluded without goals after 90 minutes, leading to a shootout where goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged pivotal, rejecting penalties from Mohamed Salah and Oumar Marmoush to secure Nigeria’s ninth AFCON third-place finish and uphold their flawless record in this contest.
