President Bola Tinubu commended the Super Eagles on their impressive 4-0 victory over the Cheetahs of the Republic of Benin.
He regarded the performance as a significant help to Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement signed on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the team’s hunger, passion, and commitment during the Uyo encounter, adding their outstanding performance had “reignited Nigerians’ football pride.”
“While the job is not yet complete, I join millions of Nigerian football fans in wishing our team every success in the playoffs,” Tinubu said.
The president mentioned that the national mood reflected a shared belief that Nigeria deserved a place at the 2026 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
“As your president, I assure you and the coaching crew of the Federal Government’s support as you strive to secure your place at the tournament. Nigerians everywhere believe in you, and I do too,” Tinubu stated.
He urged the players and technical staff to maintain their momentum as they reach the crucial rounds of qualification and stated that the government would continue to support efforts to ensure Nigeria’s return to football’s largest global stage.
“We look forward to seeing you fly our flag proudly on the world stage,” the president said.
The Super Eagles’ victory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was one of their best performances in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
Nigeria, a six-time World Cup participant, last failed to qualify in 2022 after being held to a 1-1 aggregate tie by Ghana.
