The President Bola Tinubu-led federal government has announced plans to create 50 million jobs in a bid to reduce unemployment in the country.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting yesterday.

Speaking to newsmen after the Council’s meeting, she noted that President Bola Tinubu is totally committed to making true his campaign promise of creating 50 million jobs.

Stating that the job creation will be in phases, she noted that industries such as the creative industry, digital economy, agri-food sector, mining, oil, and gas will contribute chiefly to the job creation.

She said, “In Mr. President’s manifesto during his campaigns, he promised 50 million jobs, and that’s our target. We will take it in phases; we are looking at different sectors of the economy that will contribute to this job creation, chief among them the creative industry and the digital economy, and then the Agric sector, agro-processing zones, mining, oil, and gas. So we’re very confident that we will achieve this”.

The decision to create jobs in the country forms part of the marching order given to ministers by Tinubu to revive the economy.

The FEC, which noted that the economy is not where we should be, examined the President’s eight-point agenda, that is, the eight priority areas for moving the Nigerian economy forward and for delivering to Nigerians.

These areas, according to Wale Edun, Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, “are basically food security; ending poverty; economic growth and job creation; access to capital, particularly consumer credit; inclusivity in all its dimensions as regards youths and women; improving security; improving the playing field on which people and particularly companies operate; rule of law; and of course, fighting corruption.”
