Plateau United talisman Vincent Temitope was attacked by an irate knife-wielding fan on Sunday after their Nigeria Premier Football League matchday 33 defeat against Nasarawa United in Lafia.
Nasarawa United defeated their North Central rivals 3-2 before a video of Vincent being treated for a cut around his neck surfaced.
Vincent missed a penalty and scored a goal during the match in the thrilling encounter between the sides.
Rhairom Zamora, a Jos-based on-air personality with Jay FM, was the first to share the disturbing video, claiming that the attack was from home fans.
“Disturbing scenes after the match in Lafia. Vincent Temitope was reportedly injured by Nasarawa United fans after the game.
“Absolutely unacceptable; player safety must be a priority. We await official statements from the clubs and the league,” she posted via X.
“Another video has surfaced; an eyewitness speaking in Hausa said Nasarawa United fans allegedly attempted to kill Vincent Temitope with a knife,” she said in another post.
At the time of reporting this story, neither the clubs nor the league authority had issued a statement regarding the incident.
Nasarawa United took the lead after 22 minutes through the league’s top goalscorer, Anas Yusuf, who was assisted by Abubakar Aliyu for his 15th goal of the season.
Nine minutes following the restart, Ugochukwu Leonard deflected Yusuf’s left-footed shot into the back of the net, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Plateau United cut the deficit through a solo effort by Vincent in the 58th minute, but they fell down further as Aliyu Abubakar’s free kick got parried onto the path of Leonard, who calmly gave the hosts a two-goal advantage in the 74th minute.
Plateau United were awarded a penalty in stoppage time; however, Vincent had his spot kick saved by goalie Detan Ogundare, but there was still more time for Samuel Pam to make the result 3-2.
After the encounter, both teams had 42 points in the league, with Plateau (13th) ahead of Nasarawa United (14th) on goal difference, with five games remaining.
