Super Eagles coach Finidi George has reportedly resigned his role as head of the Nigerian national team.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) reportedly relieved Finidi of his duties after the dismal performance of the Super Eagles at the World Cup qualifications.
According to reports, NFF wanted him to continue in his role as head coach as they brought in a foreign technical adviser, but he decided to resign to allow the new foreign coach to be in charge of the team without him.
With Finidi in charge, the Super Eagles secured just one point out of a possible six after losing their third and fourth games, respectively, to Benin Republic in Abidjan and South Africa 1-1 in Uyo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.
After four games, the Super Eagles have only managed three points out of a possible twelve in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States, Canada, and Mexico will jointly host.
The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, officially unveiled Finidi George as the new head coach of the Nigerian men’s national team, the Super Eagles, on May 12, 2024.
The Minister unveiled the former Super Eagles forward at an event in Abuja attended by the leaders of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) at the Media Centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Monday morning.
Finidi George, who spent 20 months as an assistant to the outgoing José Santos Peseiro, had been serving as the interim coach after the Portuguese tactician’s departure following the Super Eagles’ impressive run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
