Canadian hip-hop star Drake has placed a $300,000 (N465 million) bet on his country’s football team to defeat Argentina in the 2024 Copa América semifinal.
If Canada wins, Drake could earn $2.88 million.
Drake shared the news on social media on Tuesday with the playful caption, “This could get Messi,” accompanied by a Canadian flag.
This is Canada’s first entry in the prestigious South American event, and the national team is looking for its first major title since the 1990 North American Nations Cup.
The forthcoming match will be only the second time Canada and Argentina have played in the Copa América, with Argentina winning their group stage meeting 2-0 on June 20.
Historically, the two nations have only met once, in a friendly in 2010, with Argentina winning 5-0.
Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has stated that Messi, who recently returned from a thigh injury, will participate in the semifinals.
The 37-year-old legend missed Argentina’s last group game against Peru but returned to play the entire 90 minutes in their quarterfinal win against Ecuador.
