Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has taken inspiration from Arsenal FC, an English Premier League club, to stress the need for unity and consolidation in coalition politics.
In a message on his official X (previously Twitter) page on Wednesday, Atiku commended Arsenal’s performance and stated that the team’s success was an important lesson in the power of collective effort.
“Arsenal just taught us a lesson in consolidating our strengths in a coalition vehicle.
“Victory is assured when we stand united,” Atiku wrote.
The comment comes amid ongoing discussions about political alliances ahead of the 2027 general election, notably opposition coalition talks, for which Atiku has been a vocal supporter.
While the PDP Governors’ Forum has decided not to form any mergers or coalitions, Atiku has emphasised the necessity of opposition party unity in defeating the incumbent All Progressives Congress in the next election cycle.
Drawing on football to represent political strategy, his most recent comment appears to be a subtle reminder to like-minded politicians and parties about the importance of synergy and deliberate collaboration.
Atiku, a lifetime football fan and Arsenal FC supporter, has frequently used sports analogies to communicate with young Nigerians and broader audiences about national and political issues.
