Senegal paraded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy before Saturday’s friendly against Peru at the Stade de France after being stripped of the title earlier this month.
Morocco was crowned the victor of the 2025 Afcon tournament after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the result of the January final.
Senegal’s players walked off the field in protest after Morocco was granted a stoppage-time penalty with the score 0-0.
When they returned after a 17-minute delay, Morocco missed the penalty kick, and Senegal won in extra time.
Following an appeal by the Moroccan FA (FRMF), CAF later declared that Senegal had forfeited the match, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.
Senegal has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has stated that it will rule on the case “as soon as possible.”
Before the match against Peru, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and his teammates took a lap of honor on the pitch, followed by Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy placing the trophy in the stadium’s presidential box.
Senegal also used a shirt with two stars above their badge to represent winning two AFCON titles: the disputed 2025 championship and the previous 2021 triumph.
They defeated Peru 2-0 thanks to goals from Nicolas Jackson, who is on loan at Bayern Munich from Chelsea, and Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr.
Senegal’s friendly in Paris was their first match since the Afcon final and is part of their preparations for the World Cup, which begins in November.
They have been placed in the same category as France, Norway, and either Bolivia or Iraq.
