Senegal won the African Nations Championship (CHAN) bronze medal on Friday with a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Sudan in Kampala.

The 2022 winners rallied from a goal down to draw 1-1 in regulation time before winning the penalty shootout at Mandela Stadium.

The Lions of Teranga had looked sharp, but Sudan took the lead after only six minutes thanks to a corner kick from Mohamed Tia Asad.

Senegal pressed hard against a tight Sudanese defence and was rewarded just before the hour when Seyni Mbaye latched onto a right cross from Ousseynou Seck to equalise.

Sudan had a wonderful opportunity to win with eight minutes remaining when Maaz Koko missed a shot when alone in front of goal.

In the subsequent shootout, Senegal converted through Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cisse, and Libasse Gueye. Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen failed to secure the target for the losers.

Senegal’s bronze medal was a consolation after the defending champions were defeated 5-3 on penalties by Morocco in the semi-finals on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw.

Morocco, the two-time champions, will play Madagascar in the final on Saturday in Nairobi.
