Atletico Madrid and Spain forward Samu Omorodion has signed a five-year deal with Portuguese club FC Porto to end his transfer saga this summer.

The imposing forward was close to joining Chelsea before the transfer fell through but in a shock move, he joined Porto and was unveiled on Friday.

Omorodio joins Porto for initial €15 million that covers 50 percent of the player’s rights. Porto can purchase an additional 15 percent of Omorodion’s rights in 2025 and a further 15 percent in 2026 for €5 million each, raising Atlético earnings on the striker to €25 million.

“It’s an honor to be part of a club with the enormous history of FC Porto. I know the responsibility of playing here, where forwards like Gomes, Jardel, Falcao and Jackson Martinez have played, but I know I’m ready,” Omorodion told Porto website.

Samu Omorodion will wear the number 9 shirt at his new club.

Born to Nigerian parents in Melilla, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, Samu Omorodion moved to Seville during his childhood and started playing football at AD Nervión’s schools before joining Granada’s ranks.

His footballing prowess caught the eye of bigger clubs when he scored 18 goals in 33 games for the “Nazaríes” B team.

Atletico paid a small fee to sign him from Granada last summer and immediately loaned him to Alavés where he scored eight shots and made one assist in the 34 La Liga matches.

In 10 months, between September 2023 and July 2024, Omorodion featured for Spain under-19, under-21 and under-23 teams, winning gold at the Paris Olympics where he scored one goal.
